I recently had the pleasure of taking Caroline Fairbanks-Critchfield’s (author of the popular sewing blog, Sew Can She and co-author of Just For You Sewing) newest Craftsy class, Colorful Patchwork Bags & Baskets. I was really impressed with the class and how simple it was to make a cute patchwork basket (or tote), perfect to fit all my sewing necessities!
In the class, Caroline teaches a unique technique that makes sewing patchwork simple and precise. Instead of sewing each square together one-by-one, she teaches how to use gridded interfacing to make your points perfect and everything aligned just right. The product she uses is Pellon 802 gridded interfacing (by the yard or by the bolt) and I have to say, I am now a true patchwork believer. No more fighting with those pesky points or forgetting which square goes next! One of the great things about Caroline’s class is that you can make ANY size basket you want. She has a handy chart prepared for you, OR you can come up with your own dimensions. It’s really simple to create a HUGE laundry holder, a teensy ring holder, OR a mid-sized basket for all those sewing essentials.
Her class also has instructions on how to sew a patchwork tote. I didn’t get around to making a tote yet, but it’s definitely an added bonus for her class. There are seriously LIMITLESS possibilities when it comes to these projects!
Wouldn’t this be an adorable gift for a new sewist? Whip up a cute patchwork basket (with the help of Caroline’s Craftsy class) and stuff it full of sewing essentials? I know I would have loved to receive this when I first started out!
