Skopelos Maxi Tank Dress

Throughout the first few months of this pregnancy, I’ve found that the only thing I feel comfortable in and look semi-decent in are maxi dresses. For a while I wasn’t really showing and just felt like I had over-indulged in chips and queso (anyone else get that feeling?!) I’m finally starting to look a bit pregnant, but still not SO pregnant that people are asking me when my due date is. So, in search for comfortable, loose-fitting, still somewhat fashionable style, I’ve resorted to wearing a lot of maxi dresses. I have one from seamly.co that I LOVE, and a few from Old Navy that were inexpensive and get the job done. I knew I should just sit down and sew a couple since, you know.. that’s what I do… But I hadn’t gotten around to it. I used the Skopelos Blog Tour as an excuse for that 😉

I used my Tank Dress pattern as a base for this dress. I adjusted the length along the shorten/lengthen line to make it hit around my ankles, AND sewed it out of a knit so it has a little more give. When adjusting the pattern pieces, I widened the skirt opening at the bottom by about 4″ on the fold (so about 8″ total) to give my legs room to walk. Another idea would be to create a slit up one side or both so your legs can move. I added the shirring in the back, as you can see, and really love how it turned out. I love how easy this dress is to make and wear!

The fabric is a knit from Katarina Roccella’s new line for Art Gallery, Skopelos. I love the floral + stripe combo and couldn’t have photographed it at a more perfect place: Santa Monica Beach. Skopelos MAXI Tank Dress // SewCaroline.com Skopelos MAXI Tank Dress // SewCaroline.com Skopelos MAXI Tank Dress // SewCaroline.com Skopelos MAXI Tank Dress // SewCaroline.comIf you want to check out the other folks who are participating in this hop, here’s the schedule below (April and I switched spots, so visit her blog on my assigned day 😉 )

  1. This is pretty Caroline! As a mom of 6, I can assure you that we all have the “I look like I ate too much” phase. Most people won’t even notice :) Dresses are definitely a great way to flatter the baby bump. I always feel thinner when I add a belt to my dresses. It accentuates the thinnest part of your body and makes the baby bump look more obvious early on. Also, I like the site redesign! :)

  2. Yep, I’m in that phase right now too! :) I’ve been looking at your tank dress pattern as one that would work for maternity so I’m happy to see it does! Did you go down in size since you made it in a knit? Or keep it at your regular size, to provide extra room? Thanks!
