12 Days of Handmade Gifts: Day NINE, Erin from Sewbon

Hi everyone! I’m Erin from Sewbon and I’m SO excited to be contributing my leather tassel keychain to Sew Caroline’s 12 Days of Handmade Gifts series! Eeep! Thanks for having me, Caroline!

Andy and I recently moved and, in the process, we cleaned out our keys. It’s really amazing how many keys we had to who knows what. Seriously. But, it got me thinking about how boring my existing key chain was and inspired me to make something a lot more fun. This is a super simple and quick DIY that anyone can do and makes for a great gift.

Want to make one too? Here’s the scoop!

Materials

  • Leather
  • Leather Glue (I used Tanner’s Bond Leathercraft Cement)
  • Straight Edge
  • Rotary Cutter or Scissors
  • Metal Cap (I used the Bead Landing Clasp from Michaels although I couldn’t find the link on their site)
  • Key Ring

Instructions

The first step is to determine the width of the leather. Leather comes in different thicknesses and there are different types of metal caps out there, so it’s not one size fits all. To determine the length, roll the leather and place the rolled end into the metal cap. If there is too much space in the cap, add another roll to the leather. If the leather won’t fit, unroll it a little until the leather easily fits into the metal cap. Mark the spot on the leather and cut the leather to that width. My width was 2.5 inches.

Next, cut the length of the leather to the desired length. I chose to make my length 3 inches.

Now, draw a line on the wrong side of the leather 1/4 inch from the top.

Mark every 1/8 inch along the bottom of the leather and again just below the solid line at the top.

Line up the dots and, using a straight edge, take a rotary cutter and cut at each dot from the bottom of the leather until the solid line. Or, cut with scissors every 1/8 inch, stopping at the solid line.

Roll the leather up again and double check that the leather still fits in the metal cap.

Add a line of glue on the back of the leather in the non-cut portion, and slowly roll up the leather.
