Ready for our last installment of drafting + sewing a custom circle skirt? Well, ready or not.. here it is!

Yesterday we left off with the front part of the waist band sewn on to the skirt. Today, we’re starting with the zipper.
First, at the opening (where your other side seam will be) you’ll match the top metal part of the zipper to line up with the top edge of your waist band. Wherever the bottom metal part hits, mark with a pencil.

You’ll take your skirt, right sides together, and sew up the side until the mark you made. When you get to the mark, backstitch. Next, we’ll insert the zipper. When you are facing the skirt opening, you’ll line up the left side of your skirt with the right side of the zipper, face down. If this doesn’t make sense, see the photo below and hopefully you’ll be able to see it better. Since we have been using a 1/2″ seam allowance, be sure there is 1/2″ from the edge of the fabric to the zipper “teeth”. This way, we can stay consistent with our seam allowance.

You’ll sew as close as possible to the “teeth” using your zipper foot if you have one (its not crucial, just gets the stitches as close as possible).  Sew all the way down, when you get to the point you marked (where you’ve already sewn up a bit) separate the seam allowance and lay flat, continue sewing the zipper down all the way.

You’ll repeat this on the other side of the zipper and it should look like this:

Flip your skirt right side out and line up, pin and sew the waistband facing, right sides together, to the front waistband. Trim the excess to match the seam allowance and make sure the zipper “teeth are pointing in towards the skirt.

When its sewn all the way around the top, press the bottom and edge under 3/8-1/2″

Press the waistband facing down and press the seams flat. The pressed edge of your waistband facing should match pretty closely to the seam where you sewed on your waistband to your skirt.
Now, you’ll need to hand-stitch (don’t freak out… its just a simple basting stitch around the waistband to hold it in place– nothing fancy and NO ONE will see it!) the waistband down.. I used a LOOSE + BIG whipstitch.

Now, you can hem it however you like and show off the brand new skirt you made for yourself!
Be sure to come back tomorrow to link up your skirts. The link-up will be open for a couple of weeks so you have time to get your skirts in :)
